NOTES AND COMMENTS
• [BT GiIXCOE.] • . Trentham racecourse,' which improves in appearance.from year to year, is looking remarkably well at the present time! and vnsitcurs -to s the Wellington Eacing Club sSSpri g Meeting on Saturday and Mondtiy should find the outing a thoroughly'enjoyable one. , All the available accommodation at tho course and at tlio neighbouring stables has booked up and big fields are promised, for almost every event. The one thing wanted now is a good downpour of rain to take the sting out of tho tracks. The course proper bears a beautifully green appearance but it is very hard, especially in parts of tho straight. Notwithstanding tho (showers which.' fell in tho city on Sunday, little or no rain fell dn the Hutt Valley, and the trainers at Trentham still fa,vour the tan track for the morning's work. Yesterday Chakwana, Miraculous, and Need galloped four furlongs together, and finished in the order named, the 'time being 51Jscc. , ICilrain covered seven furlongs in Imin. 835e0., having Want for,a companion over the last half mile. Undecided and Eons were "associated over Eeven furlongs, the former finishing in front. ■' Beldame, alone,- covered four furlongs in SOisec. , Gold Foil, Nenno, the Danube colt, and Descft Gold finished in the order named over three furlongs. Gold Foil's time being 3Ssec. ' \ ■ Bklboa held Camulus safe over a mile run in' lmin. 48sec., while Labour Day and Campeador registered slightly better time over a similar distance. Eingform'a task was also a mile gallop, tho time being lmin: 47Jsec. :. Useful work was accomplished by Multiply, Chortlo, Birkful, Tete-a-Tete, Ivoova, Asterias, Sweet Corn, Crown I'earl, Confirm, Glenroy, and several others. Trainor T.i Quinlivan arrived from Hastings on Monday night, and- two members of his team, Sea Pink and Steinhall, [ wero to reach headquarters last night. Eaupani was expected from Gisborno, yesterday. The grey horse is to be quartered. at J. W. Lowe's stable. '• Mount Victoria and Eoumania/ who | competed at the Dunedin. and Timttru meetings, were brought' home' to Trentham. yesterday. J. Rao has' reached Trentham from Auckland. His team, for the W.E.C. mooting consists of Merry Eoe, Bleriot, and La Ecina. Probably Castalia will' bo brought south to compete at Eiccaiton. . It is reported that the Eiccaxton trainer M. Hobbs will not bring any member of iiis team north for the racing on Satur-; day or Monday. Tho following Eiccarton trainers. with their chiirges are making arrangements to leave for Trentham on Thursday:—E. Longlcy, Bee and Twelth./Night; P. M'Grath, Tannhauser and Martigues; H. Chilis, Quarantine, First Flight, Battlo Eve and Floweret; and D. Moraghan, Medallist. E. O'Donnell also has Bonny Dream and Sauci engaged, and ho will probably niake the journey. . Emperador, who has: boon enjoying a respito since his return from the Maniiwaitu Jockey Club's. Atifcunm Meeting, has rejoined Mason's active brigado at Eiccarton. Einaldo is not to race until tho New Zealand Clip- Meeting. A writer in the Christchurch "Evening News" says that Chudio was half turned round when the tapes were released in the Farewell Handicap at tho South Canterbury meeting, and lost a lot of ground, or he might have won; J.. Williamson, the Auckland trainor, who has. been on a trip to Sydney, returned to Wellington yesterday. In four out of five oontests for the Champion Plate, three-year-olds havo prevailed. When Equitas won in 1912 the starters did not include a three-year-old., A. J. M'Flinn, the' Auckland crosscountry rider, who broke his collar-bone at Marton, and has been recuperating in' Sydney, returned, to Wellington by yesterday's steamer, and will be seen in tho saddle again, at the Gisborno meeting., When the last mail left Australia Ulva's Isle was a strong fancy for tho Melbourne Cup and Woorak had ousted Mountain Knight from pride of position foT tho V.R.C. Derby. Among the winners at the South Australian Jockey Club's meeting on October 110, was Dr. A. H. Bennett's Soultburg, , a three-quarter brother to the defunct Holtano. Since arriving in Melbourne, the Mas-torton-owncd Sir Solo has not altogether pleased tho touts. His chance of success in tho Melbourno Cup is not held very high.
