THE KAIRAKI WRECK
NAUTICAL INQUIRY OPENS,IBy TeleEraDh.-Prflse Association.) Greymouth, October 19. The nautical inquiry into the wreck of the Kairaki opened this morning before Mr. J. G. Evans, S.M., Captain Black, and Mr. H. Hainbleton (assessors). ■ ' -ii. Captain M'Pherson, noting harbourmaster, said that it was evident from the position of tho .wreck that the vessel had got out of control, otherwise she would have been two miles further out. It was quite possible, with the wind and strong tido on the night-of the wreck, for the vessel to drift to its present position. The wreck was _ m twelve fathoms. Witness did not think the captain could attempt to anchor at ,/that depth. James Anderson, Harbour Board signalman, stated that he saw no signals of distress. . . i Captain Baldwin, of the s.s. Kittawa, gave evidence as to the nature of the weather on the night of the wreck. Other ovidence given was purely formal. The Court takes evidence- at Hokitika to-morrow.
