ROWING

N.Z. AMATEUR ASSOCIATION

CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR PICTON

The twenty-seventh annual meeting of the Now Zealand Amateur Rowing Association was hold on Saturday night. Mr. R. M. Isaacs presided, and there were sovon other delegates present. ' The annual balance-sheet showed the association to be in a satisfactory position financially. The credit balance at tho bank was £80 9s. 7d.; the balance of assets over liabilities £84 15s. 10d., whilst the not receipts for the year, over expenditure, were £10 ss. lOd. The report showed the number of clubs affiliated as 51, with a total active paying membership of, approximately, 2730. The presentation of a handsome challenge shield by Mr. R. C. Somcrville, Auckland, for competition in eight-oared races open to all affiliated clubs, had established this branch of oarsmanship in the Dominion. In common with other sports, rowing felt during the past year the effects of the late strike, and it was particularly noticeablo in the*abandonment of soveral regattas in various parts of tho Dominion. Now, with the Empire engaged in war, and a large number of members of affiliated clubs away on active service, prospects for a good year may not be rosy, but at the same time the coun'cil was optimistic, and thought that the various local associations and thflit clubs could, even in tho fact of difficulties, continue to advance their sport by securing young members, and the holding of as many regattas or interclub races as possible. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said that the council bad given a good deal of attention to eighty oared rowing during the past season. Tlie'state of their balance-sheet reflected credit on their secretary and treasurer.

The report and balaiice-sheet were adopted.

The election of officers resulted as under:—President, Mr. G. J. Riddell (Marlborough); vice-presidents, Messrs. A. S. Biss (Wellington) and A. I. Far-, iner (Auckland), both re-elected; council, Messrs. E. Innis (Auckland), W.' Bedford (Auckland)/ R. W. M'Villy (Oiago), R. M. Isaacs (Otago), D. R. Menzies (Wellington), J. E. Widdop (Wellington), and G. Lauchlan (Wanganui);' secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. D. Bayfield (re-elected); auditor, Mr. G. C, Fache (re-elected). Mr. G. Laueldan (Wanganui) moved a new rule as follows:—"That the minimum weight of coxswains used at regattas under the jurisdiction of the N.Z.A.R.A., be five and a half stone." In support of the motion he advanced the ground that it was felt impossible to get boys of mature judgment under that weight. After discussion the motion was lost. ■ An alteration to Rule 18 was forwarded from the Auckland Association, to provide that tho cloth for championship coate should bo supplied by the N.Z.A.R.A., in addition to caps and badges, as at present.—A motion to that effect was rejected. Discussion was raised as to tho adoption of a, definition of an eight-oared clinker boat. A sub-committeo reported on the matter, suggesting a definition as follows:—Length 57ft., beam 26iu., depth amidships 9in., how Clin., stern shn. —Tho definition as suggested, was adopted, tho council to complete tho matter. '■

The Marlborough Association made application for the annual championship regatta, to be held at Picton. The delegate said that the prize-money would be quite up to the standard if tho meeting was allocated to Picton.

Mr. A. D. Bayfiold spoke against the championships being held too early in the season. Tho last occasion on which the regatta was held at Picton the date fixed was in January. That, he felt, was too early.

An assurance was given that the regatta would be held during Easter week if given to Picton.

Finally a motion was carried as follows:—"That the . next championship regatta bo held at Picton, not earlier than March 1, 1915."
