NOTES AND COMMENTS
rßr Glencoe.] The Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting takes place at Trentham on Saturday and Monday next, and the tracks will be busy from to-morrow onwards. Capital acceptances have been received for the first day's events, and a large number of visiting horses will be competing at the meeting. Yestordav's rain will serve to put the grass gallops, in nice order for the training operations. Mr. S. J. Gibbons, owner of Eq'uitas, was advised last week that the result of the mare's mating with the imported horse Kilbroney Was a dead foal. ' Tho Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club's annual meeting takes place on the Wa-verley Racecourse on Monday next. Uncle Sam, who won the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, was also successful in the big handicap event in 1912, -and last year ho 'finished fourth' in the same event. In 1912 ho also won the Toorak Handicap. . Notwithstanding its reputation as a remarkably hard_race to win, the Caulfield Cup has witnessed dual successes on the part of such excellent.performers as Pans (1892 and 1894), Hymottus (1898 and 1901), and Poseidon (1906-7), whoso achievements were interesting features of the history of tho raco.- Another great effort was .that of Lady Medallist, who won in 1911, and ran a meritorious second to Uncle Sam in tho subsequent year. \Uncle Sam was bred by his ownor, Mr. W. Reid, who for many yoars helped old Gordon Brook, of New South Walos, to carry on tho ancient Splendora breed. Although a lineal descendant of the famous colour dominant St. Simon , Uncle Sam is a chestnut eloquent of his Birdcatoher and Kelpie blood. His sire, United States, was by the colour dominant Bill of Portland, his dam by another dominant in Musket; but Melly, although by a brown in Newminster (son of a chestnut by a line of chestnuts), threw to her dam. tho chestnut Melodiiis (dam of Wallace) by tho famous Goldsbrough from Melody, dam of that champion stayer Melos. Uncle Sam is inbred to the No. 3 family through United States, Galopm, King Tom, Musket, Toxophilito, lhe Flying Dutchman, Newminster, Stockwell, and Australian Sir Hercules, and a sounder pedigree could not bo desired.
I Nominations for the principal events at tho Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting close on Friday, November 13. Rerehau contracted a cold last week, hence her withdrawal from her Masterton engagements. Hay of the better quality is reported to be very scarce at the present time. The Pole, who won a hack welter at Timaru on Thursday, and who is booked to race in the steeplechase at Trentham next Saturday, competed over the big country at Amb'erley, but fell in ' the Bra-ckenfield Steeplechase when in a good position. Garanco seems to- be for ever in trouble. While being oxerciscd the day after his victory at Hastings, ho stopped on a beef hone, which turned upwards and struck him on the coronet. Ho was vory sore last week, and a decision as to whether ho will make tho [ trip to Trentham or not will be deferred until to-morrow. Pariform will be brought to Trentham on Wednesday, but may not be started at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting. He will bo accompanied l to tho course by Bertrada, Expect, La Favour-' ita, Sarcelle (Elevation—Parera), and' Amphora (Achilles —Vasa). Sarcelle will be Mr "Highden's" ropresontativo in tho Wellosley Stakes, and no doubt Amphora will be a starter, in the two-year-old handicap event on Labour Bay if the weights are suitable. . At the annual meeting of the Tara-tahi-Oarterton Racing Club on. Saturday, Mr. H. R. Bunny, president, in the chair, the balaiice-shcet showed a credit on the year's working. All last year's officers were re-elected. At a meeting of the stewards later, it was decided to put five flat races and two trotting races on tho programme for bho Boxing Day Meeting, which is subject to alteration should the club regain its lost day.
