A lady residing near the Clsrle, in Scotland, writing to her daugther in Now Zealand, gives a description of she intense naval and military activity prevailing all over the United Kingdom. The Dover-Calais- steamers now run on Sundays, she says, and Sunday newspapers have now made their appearance everywhere. Every liner that leaves port is hold up and rigorously examined by busy little war vessels, while people who live near the coasts are frequently awakened at nights by tho sudden glare of searchlights sweeping in from the sea. Sentries and military posts are met with in all directions. While the writer of the letter and her daughter wore out driving, their carriage was stopped by a, military party. A veterinarian examined the horses, and decided that they "would do." The animals were unharnessed, tho old lady' was handed the equivalent of their value in coin of the realm, and tho soldiers departed with tho horses, leaving the carriage and harness on the road. The ladies walked home, and no one seemed to mind—"it was al in a good cause."
