THE MAN WHO FIRED THE MINE
TRIAL OF PRINCIPE, THE ASSASSIN "GLORIED IN THE ACT." (Rec. October 18, 10.40 a.m.) Rome, October 16. At tho trial of Principe (charged with tho assassination of the Archduko Franz Ferdinand and his wife), tho prisoner declared that he gloried in the act, of which the object was not to kill a man, but to show the world the desperation to which Austria had driven tho Slav population. Principe averred that when rebellion was a duty the only possible protest was by striking at an individual who incarnated despotism. He likened himself to Mazzini, Kossuth, and Daniel O'Connell. He regretted the death of the Archduchess. He alone was the responsible organiser of tho plot. » PERSONS IN HIGH PLACES. Sarajevo, October 16. At the trial of the persons implicated in the murders of the Archduko Franz Ferdinand and his wife, a man named Cabrinovic confessed that, though he held anarchist ideas, during tho Balkan War, ho became a convinced Nationalist. When he heard of the Archduke visiting Sarajevo, he conferred with Principo, and while they were planning the murder, Major Tantosic, of Servia, supplied the weapons and taught their use. Cabrinovic admitted that he had an audience with the Servian Crown Prince in April, but refused to disclose its nature.
