DODGING A GERMAN CRUISER

MAITAI PUTS INTO SAN DIEGO. , The up trip of the Maitai, to San Francisco was not without incident. As she drew near tho American coast there was 'reason to suppose that the German cruiser Leipzig was operating thereabouts, lying .in wait for Britisi vessels inward bound to San Francisco. As it seemed to bo taking-an unnecessary risk to keep on her ordinary course., tho Maitai made for San Diego, California's southernmost port,' and so rot within the three-milo limit of the coast, which spells safety. When off San Diego Caotain Carson communicated with the 'British Vice-Consul there, Mr Allen who advised him to wait until daylight and then moor in the harbour. The Maitai went into 'San' Diego next morning, and-hav-ing waited 24 hours proceeded thence up 'the coast to San Francisco (over 400 miles away).
