HIGH COMMISSIONER'S ADVICES
SUCCESSFUL FRENCH ADVANCE IN ALSAOE. The Prime Minister has received the following message from the High Commissioner:— ■ t, ~ ~ . ' London, October 16. Reliable.—Rome reports that, the French , reocoupy Altkirch, in Alsace, and threaten Mulhausen. Amsterdam reports that' the French hold an excellent position on the Alsatian frontier. It is estimated that there are one hundred thousand Germans at Ghent. na . ■ , m • London, October 16. ■ ~ eMffl J B offensive on the Allies' right wing, north of St. Die, in the Vosges, has been checked. Progress has been, recorded after the enemy s night attacks south-east of Verdun, The enemy's trenches have been taken m the Reims district. ' .The Allies have also advanced in the centre, between the Oise and the Aleuse, towards Craonne. The position is unchanged in the Lene district. The enemy have marched westward from Antwerp, and reached the Bruges and Thielt district. -<- ■
