SUCCESSES IN FRANCE

GERMAN OFFENSIVE CHECKED AUSntO -'GERMANS' BEATEN ACCIDENT AT AUSTRIAN DOCKYARD SERIOUS LOSSES ' GERMAN GUNBOAT CAPTURED IN THE TACIFIC

• The news from both, frontiers is very cheering. On the FrancoBritisli side the Germans are being steadily pushed back) and their great effort .to get on to the northern sea-coast of France has ended in failure. To-day it is announced that the Germans have evacuated positions in North-east France, and the Allies have captured several trenches and repulsed all night attacks. There is comparative quietness in the Centre, and in the direction of Verdun, where the.Germans claimed to have secured some success, it 'is reported to-day that their offensive movement has been definitely checked. There are no particulars of any special movements in Belgium, except on Ostend report that 50,000 Germans are- in Ghent. In Galicia, in the neighbourhood of Przemysl, it ie officially announced that the Russians defeated the Austrians, securing prisoners and capturing machine guns. There is also an unconfirmed report published by an Italian newspaper that the Russians completely defeated the combined Austrian-German forces near Warsaw, in Russian. Poland. It was previously reported- that a battle- in this neighbourhood commenced on Saturday last, and it is just possible that the Russians have won a seotional battle. The Montenegrins have dofeated the Austrions at Vlassnitza, .in Bosnia. There are no fresh developments with respect to the situation in South Africa. The Germans are reported to have lost a submarine off the coast of Scotland, while one of their gunboats was captured by the Australian worships at Rabul. A pleasing item of news is that two vessels that wera engagod in providing the cruiser Emden with coal have been captured.. The Emden has been more successful than any. other of the German cruisers.in raiding British merchant shipping.

Messages received at an early hour this niorung are very encouraging for the Allies. The French have occupied Altkirch, in Alsace, and threaten Mulhausen,. thus recommencing the invasion of Germany. The Aiistrians have met with a severe misfortune at Trieste where the scaffolding of a Dreadnought in course of construction was set on. fire. The monster vessel crashed down, and caused the wreckage of a number of smaller vessels. ' From South Africa comes news that the Union Government is taking very severe' measures to suppress the rebellion engineered by the Germans. A British patrol has come into conflict with the rebels, 80 of whom'wero captured.
