I Mr. C. E. Adams, Government As- [ tronomer, has been advised that ho has bceii elected a member of tho Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of Aniorica. News has been, received that Mr. Charlos Laing, son of Mr. Montague Laing, late manager in Wellington for Messrs. Sargood, Son, and En-en, Ltd., and now London manager, has joined the Honourable Artillery Company for active service in Europe. Tho Wellington Education Board has made the following appointments:—Mr. L. D. Gait, solo teacher, Huhunoa Kast; Mrs. L. Harvey, sole teacher, Whiteman's Valley; Miss 0. Clifford, soie teacher, Castlepoint; and Miss J. M. Haldaue, assistant, Petone West. Artificer R. Radmore, who sustained injuries to his head through being knocked over by a taxi in Willis Street on Wednesday night, had sufficiently recovered to leave tho hospital on Thursday evening. Mr. H. R. Biss, of Martinborough, has been admitted by Mr. Justice Edwards as a barrister and solicitor. . Mr. C. M. Luke has been re-elected president of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce. Mr. P. T. Clark, of Brougham Street, v vho was injured in the motor-car accident on the Butt Road on Tuesday last, was reported from the Hospital last night to be still in. a serious condibeing much about the same as the previous evening. Mr. C. S.- Harper, of. Christehurch, who'has been on a'visit to England, and America, returned to New Zealand by the Maitai. •■; r ' ' ' Mr. W. H. Zouob, who for many years was secretary of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, died at the Christehurch Hospial on Tuesday. Mr. Zouch was born in Quebec sixty-five years ago, but was educated at Eastbourne College,. Sussex, England. He came to New Zealand in. the Zambesi in 18G3. For fourteen years he took part in farming operations, but at the end of that period he entered into literary work, and for three years was on ,the staff of the "Lyttelton Times." ' Later on ho be-, came proprietor of tho Ashburton ■Guardian," and the nof the Ellosmere "Guardian" and then' of the Ellesmere period of four rears he returned to Christehurch, where he, engaged in the printing business. About ten years ago he was appointed secretary to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a position he resigned about a year ago. In that capacity he did a (ireat deal to prevent cruelty to dogs, horses, sheep, and cattle.' : He was a Past Master of tho Masonic Lodge St. John, Ashburton. , Hβ leaves a widow and one son. '' Mr. D. Maigos, clerk, Timaru Post Office, has been temporarily transferred to.the head office, Wellington, and will leave Timaru'on October 2G:
