APPLE LANDS AT WANATCHEE ROWS TWENTY-FIVE MILES LONG. Mr. Thomas Cropp, who visited the famous Wauatcheo district, 150 miles from Seattle, and a great apple growing centre, arrived by the Maitai yesterday. Hβ states that there is probably no apple-growing district like Wanatchee ni the world. It occupies tho whole of a very large valley, tho oxtent of which can be judged, when it is stated tliat tho rows of applo trees sro'2s miles in extent, and every acre of the district is' beautifully watered by ii perfect system of irrigation, the water that is caught in tho foot hills being conducted by open canals to all parts of tlio valley. The charge for participation in these water rights is 100 dollars (£2O) per aero for all time, and the price ot land runs to about 2000 dollars (£400) per acre. The water is conducted only to the boundary of tho orcha'rdist's land and from that point the owner has to-do his own channelling. What struck Mr. Cropp particularly was the care with which the fruit was graded and packed. So careful was the grading that he was told that there was invariably the same number of apples to the case in each grade. As far as he could see the packing was dono at the orchard, and from there was sent to a. central warehouse or depot, where samples of each lot were inspected before they were loaded on .to tho railway trucks. Strict laws were enforced to keep the orchards clean, and inspectors saw that the trees ■were regularly sprayed. The varieties most in favour appeared to bo the "Wanatchee red" apples (a, streaky red), "Jonathans," and "Sturmers."

Purebred dairy cattle will be about the same as last year, , and new.names in these classes are Mr. H. Stratford, in Jersoys, and Mr. W. Raymond, in Hol"eteins. In the sheep section considerable interest will this year centre in the fat sheep classes which have filled well: .The export lamb class has 18 entries and the other entries in this section arc large.
