PAHIATUA NOTES.

The fires in the Waione (Pongaroa) district last week destroyed large quantities of totara posts and much valuable totara. It was reported at tho Akitio County Council meeting last Saturday that 6000 ft. of totara prepared for tho coast bridges had also been destroyed. It is stated that the quantity of grass seed required to sow on Messrs. Hunter Bros.' property, whore- the fire swept through a large area of felled bush and scrub, will amount to close on thirty- tons. Tho Akitio County Council has received a notification from the State Advances Department, stating that the balance of tho £28,000 loan (£7000), will be paid over to tho council on December lof this year. Tho rato of interest to bo charged on tho final instalment will bo i\ per cent., the same as was charged on the previous instalment. Anglers report that the fish in the Makuri River are in very good condition this season. Mr. L. Amey, a well-known resident of l'ahiatua, died at tho Pahiatua Hospital on Monday night. The deceased, who was single and thirty years of ago, had resided in Pahiatua for the past ten years. Ho was a keen fishing enthusiast, and was a member of 'the Pahiatua 'Foresters' Lodge. Two brothers reside in Pahiatua, but his ether relatives are in England.
