IN ANTARCTICA
SIR DOUGLAS MAWSON'S LECTURE. . Sir Douglas Mawson again lectured at the 'Grand Opera Houso last night on his explorations in Antarctica. Tho tiagic journey .ho made with Lieutenant Ninnis and Dr. Metz was told in a sympathetic strain, and tho lecturer was obviously touched in mentioning the deaths of his companions. He himself had some marvellous escapes from death in his lonely march to regain the main base. Just when ho had about given up hope he discovered, during n blizzard, a cache of food left by a search party. This enabled him- to reach the base, only to see tho relief ship disappearing over the horizon. As it was tine then, a wireless message was sent offer the retreating vessel, but a gale came up and the ship had to leave JMawsoii and hi 6 six companions to spend another winter at Adelio Land. They had touch with tho outside world, via the wireless at Macquarrie Island, hut on many occasions connection was interrupted. Once, after the wireless polo had been down for two months, they got into touch with Tasmania, and eagerly asked for Press news. Tho first and only item they could get through to that the Isle of Man had recognised the Chinese Republic. The films and Inn torn slides depicting wonderful views of the frozen expanse in anjl around Adelie Land, were again shown, and excited tho greatest admiration. Sir Douglas Mawson will give a farewell lecture at the Grand Opera House on Thursday evening, October 22, prior to his departure for England the following day. ,
