The New Zealand golf championship mooting \vas commenced at Middlemore links to-day, when the first and second lounds of tlio open championship wero played. Tho weather was ideal for play, when tho first pair started, shortly after nine o'clock, but towards 11 o'clock tho wind increased and brought up rain, which continued to fall in driving showers for about .two hours. Tho greens had been fast for the past week, and low snoring resulted in the practice, but to-day's rain changed the conditions, and upset some of the players' form. LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP

INTER-ISLAND TEAMS' MATCH. . Dunedin, October 12. At the ladies' golf meeting to-day the inter-Island nine a-side teams' match was played, and resulted in a win for the South Island by six games to two. Mrs. Williams (Masterton) and Miss Wright (Timaru) were all square; Miss L. Brandon (Wellington) beat Miss Wood (Chi'istchurch) on the last hole; Miss Harris (Hagley) beat Miss Bell (Wellington); Miss N. Brandon (Wellington) beat Miss Wilson (Christcliurch); Miss Humphreys (Christchurch) beat, Mrs. M'Lean (Hawera); Miss Cowlishaw (Christchurch) beat Miss Cotter (Auckland)'; Mrs. M'Carthy (St. • Clair) beat Miss R. Gorrie (Auckland); Mrs. Murphy (Otago) beat Miss N. Gorrie (Auckland); Mis Theomin (Otago) beat Miss Turton (Miramar). All the games but the first two were won easily. In the handicap bogey match, Miss Wood (2 down) was first in the handicap 15 and under, and Miss Harris came second. In the handicaps over 15, Miss Forbes (2 down) was first, and Miss Roberts (5 down) second.
