GALLANT BELGIUM.
"DIE, BUT NEVER BE SLAVES." The following letter has been received by Mr. Walter A. Cos, of Sydney, from the directors of Messrs. Verreries do Scailmont, Manage, Belgium. This gloss works firm does a very large export trade in tumblers to Australia and Now Zealand:— 1 "Manage, Belgium, Aug. 8, 1914. "Pear Mr. Cox, — "By the time this' letter reached you you will, we expect, know the position wo are in at present here. "Everything is at a standstill. The horrors of war are upon us. Our bravo troops are-fighting those of the mad dog. Fortunately we are not alone, and" France and England are with us in these anxious moments. Our joint efforts will drive the savages back to their haunts.,, Wo havo every hope of doing so. Every civilised country on tho face of the earth is with us. If wo aro to disappear from tho map as a nation wo shall he brave to tho very last, and die, but never bo slaves! "Evory available man under 50 is doing his duty, and if this should bo tho last letter you receivo from us, wo hope you will always keep a kind and pleasant remembrance of us. "As business has totally stopped, wo do not feel inclined to write sjjout commercial matters. Pray God that wo nro successful in our defensive work, and, if so, and the Germans aro wiped off tho earth, it will bo the better for all.
