The Senate of the University of Lon* don has conferred the degree of 8.D.on the Rev. James Cumming, M.A., of Khandallali. Mr. Cumming studied ot the' TFniversity of Edinburgh, and graduated with honours in natural science. He held the Senior Gunning Scholarship, in Science and Theology, "which- is. open for first-year theological students of Scottish Universities. Mr. Cumming is well known in the courts of the Presbyterian Church, and is also well known: amongst his brethren as an enthusiastic; Hebraist.. . . A cablegram from Home states" thati Dr. Geo. J. Adams; of' Foxton, has been successful in : passing the examination of the Fellowship. for the RoyaJ College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Many will deeply regret to learn 06 the death in Auckland ou Friday niorniag of Mr. A. K. Hayward, editor of the "New Zealand Farmer." Until recently, Mr. Hayward's health had been excellent, but a few weeks ago he was ordered to undergo a serious operation, and his death followed. Tho deceased, who was 47 years of age, ar-, rived in New Zealand from England about thirty years, ultimately taking up'land in the Bay of Plenty district. Later, he founded the "East Coast Guardian," at>Opotiki, and then bename atached to the Waikato "Argus." Once again he moved,- this time to Tβ Kuiti, where he'founded tho "King Country Chronicle." and finally; in 1806, he came to Auckland as editor of tho "New Zealand Farmer." Mr J. R. Boose, secretary of the Royal Colonial Institute, left Wellington for the South ou Saturday night. Mr. C.
