CHARGE OF UNFAIR TRADING
AGAINST CHINESE STOREKEEPERS. An old grievance is being revived by the. master retail tobacconists of Wellington, who protest that the conditions of trade that are at present allowed to exist are the reverse of fauto them. The point they wish to make is that;' whilst the white retailers, under an agreement, are compelled to close their promises 'at'B p;m.. daily, the Chinese storekeeper is allowed to sell tobacco, cigars, and cigarettes as long as he likes to keep open, which is generally about 11 p.m. This, the white tobacconists allege, seriously injure their businesses, which are conducted within reasonable hours. Not only is this the case, but as the Chinese shopkeepers only keep smokers' requisites' as a side line to fruit, vegetable, and grocery businesses, they are able' to give small concessions on tobacco and cigarettes which the. white tobacconist is not able to.do, which practice still furthor cuts into : the legitimate tobacconists' business. \ Tho Wellington Master Tobaor-onists' and Hairdressers' Association have approached the Government on the matter, and- the Prime Minister is to receive a deputation from that body at 9.45 a.m. to-morrow.
