FURIOUS FIGHTING AT ANTWERP
HEAVY GERMAN LOSSES Parfoi October 7. Official.—The Belgian forces defending Antwerp successfully repelled German attacks. , Ostend, October 7. The Germans are clearing the fields in the neighbourhood of Brussels of food crops, and sending the crops to Germany by special trains. There are indications that the pavements in front of the leading public buildings are mined. Heavy sandbag barricades have been erected round the Palais de Justice. (Rec. October 8, 10.30 p.m.) London, October 7. It is reported that Belgian Ministers' have removed their quarters from Antwerp to Ostend. The diplomatists accompanied the Ministers. Prior to the abandonment of Brussels to the Germans, the Belgian Royal Family, the Ministry, and the diplomatic corps on August 17 were reported to have removed from Brussels to Antwerp. FURIOUS FIGHTING AT OUTER FORTS.' (Rec. October 9, 0.45 a.m.) London, October 8., The fighting- before Antwerp on Tuesday was of-, a most furious character. The Germans advanced between the outer forts, but were shot down in thousands. They, brought 1 , up fresh reinforcements from Brussels and hurried the infantry recklessly against the Belgian trenches, but eventually they crossed the River Nethe (about seven miles from Antwerp). The enemy also renewed the attempts to cross the Scheldt, between Gremberghen/and Schoonaerde, but-failed. The German sliTapnel inflicted considerable, though not serious, losses in the Belgian trenches; The Belgian artillery shelled the Germans out of Schoonaerde, destroying a German chemical factory.
