HOMESTEADS RUINED HEAVY LOSS TO SETTLERS (By Teleerwb-Prese Aesooiotion.J I ' Dannevirfte, October 7. During the past two' days the heavy galo blowing faimed smouldering lo;* fires into a serious menace to the whole countryside. Fires have been devastating settlements over the whole district, but assumed most serious proporjtionslost night, when the sky was illuminated by big fires at Terehunga, Rliaroa, Umutaoroa, Piripiri, Makotuku, Raumati, Tepapakuku, and elsewhere. ; Settlers in all these districts spent the last two nights fire-fighting and in the/protection of property. But for their vjtliant efforts many places would have gone up in smoko. As it is, considerable damage was done Jaet evening, Euaroa district reporting the loss of several houses. Settlers there , who have been burnt out are S. Studor, 6. Edwards, L. Retter, TV. Ingles, and .Tarr's old homestead. Many.outhouses have been burned, fences destroyed; , and stock lost also at this : settlement. Although the conditions are not aa bad in other parts, the settlers there will be heavy losers on account of. the destruction of spring feed. is still blowing, and other houses are endangered.
