ADULTERATED MILK
TAITA DAIRYMAN FINED £20. 'A plea of not guilty was entered by John Gordon, dairjnian, of Taita, Lower Hutt, who-appeared before Mr. D. 6. A. .Cooper, S.M7, at the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer a charge of sellingi milk below the standard -required by the Food and Drugs Act. - Mr. H. H.' Ostler prosecuted, while Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the defendant. Ernest Middleton, inspector, deposed to purchasing a sample of milk (produced) from Gordon, at the Hutt Railway Station, on August 20. Questioned • by' Sir. Jackson, witness said.that defendant did not wait for his sample, and that he instructed Inspector Cawdray to take the sample to Gordon's house. This had been done. Corroborative evidence was •• given jby Inspector J. H. Cawdmv. The analysis of the milk showed that it contained 9.1 per cent. of.water, artificially added. In his'• evidence, Gordon ptated that fully two hours elapsed between the time he'left the: station and when he received the sample. He bad been a dairyman for thirty years, during which time-he had.been once convicted for selling adulterated milk. -•The Magistrate: The Court is of the opinion that the 6ample was delivered as soon as possible. Defendant is convicted and fined £20. ! Mr. Jackson asked the Magistrate to fix security for appeal. This was granted, with costs (£8 Be.). ■
