Dannevirke, October 7, In many localities tho fires aro still 'burning fiercely, hut fortunately the gale lias abatecL If no further wind prevails little additional damage may be anticipated. Tho liuaroa district has suffered severely, five houses being destroyed there. Settlers also have- sustained heavy losses. Several empty houses were destroyed, whilo early on Wednosday morning tho fires were dangerously close to tho township, showers of sparks falling near the hall and school. Fortunately none of the adjacent buildings caught, otherwise the town would probably havo ' Jjeen destroyed. Miles of fencing in various parts have been devoured by the flames, and also numerous outbuildings, while tho losses to stock are reported to-be considerable, though definite figures aro not ascertainoblo. R-ain is badlv needed, otherwise wuch, further damage will be done. .
