The Marshalllslands lie about a thousand miles north-east of 'the Solomons, ihey consist of tvo chains or rows of lagoon islands (several uninhabited) ,- known respectively as Ratack (with thirteen islands) and RalicWwM eleven elands). The Germans made a treaty with the chieftains of Jalmt to 1878 and annexed the group in 1885-1886. There were 179 Europeans kfte S^S^T,, 91 were German, native population wafesti! mated at 15,000. Iho islands are but little above high-water mark and the H™ P 0 " 1 *1 mMβ group, on the island of Lilrieb, has an elevation of only ,3d feet. The vegetation,'on the whole, is very poor, and there are-verv few animals. The chief island and seat of the German Special Commissioner is Jaluit. JJhe most populous island is Majeru, with 2600 inhabitants
