AUSTRALIA
NO RETRENCHMENT-IN FEDERAL SERVICE. Sydney, October 6. Mr. W. M. Hughes (AttorneyGeneral) states that the Federal Government docs not intend to retrench in the public services, but intends setting an example to private enterprise in matters of employment. Referring to defence mattere, Mr. Hughes said it was clear Australia must get more ships, which she must build here. The war would decide what type was hest fitted for modern warfare.
