RUSSIAN VICTORY AT AUGUSTOW

ENEMY IN' DISORDERLY IETREAT

PRUSSIA INVADED

BATTLE OF SUWALII

11,000 GERMAN PRISONERS . '■■-TAKEN ■ '■•'■'

.. HARD FIGHTING IN FRANCE

' To-day's news from the theatres of war throws very little light on the developments of the operations in Prance, boyond the fact that the battle on the Allied Left is still raging with great violence. The resistance of the enemy along this front must be of a very formidable kind, for it is stated that-at certain points the Allies have ha 3to give ground, though slightly. Elsewhere along the Aisne and to the cast the situation is practically unchanged, except at Soissons, where the German trenches have been captured. In Belgium, the siege of Antwerp is- being maintained by the Germans, but there are no new developments. In the eastern.theatre great events have been taking place. The Russians have completely routed the Germans at Augustow, and the enemy is now in disorderly retreat, with the victors.in hot pursuit. Two Russian armie.s are reported to-be moving upon. Allenstein, in East Prussia, from the south and east,, while the Muscovite march into Hungary has penetrated as far as the level country of the Thiess River, where the ground is suitable for the effective manoeuvring of cavalry. Later details of the battle between the Russians and the Germans'at Suwalki show.'that the conflict was a desperate one, so exhausting to both sides that, by common consent each suspended operations for a brief rest. On the resumption of the battle, the Germans were crushed by the Russian artillery fire, and whole companies simply melted away. Eleven thousand . prisoners were taken. Elsewhere in this issue will be found an interesting budget of war news by. the, latest English mail, which arrived in Wellington yesterday. ' ' .■' . .
