AMATEUR ATHLETICS
RIVAL CASH BODIES
SOME KINDLY QUESTIONS
. Mr. A. Marryatt preeided at a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur , Athletic Association last night, . and there ' were also present: Messr6. |W. F. Larkin, C. K Bridge, W. H. Pollock, i). A. Guiso, A. Davies, and J._U. Cusack (hon. secretary). ■ Tho principal business before ■ the meeting was-a largo amount of correspondence in reference to , sports meetings to be. held-in Auckland on Labour ■JJayyUy tiro , rivap cast bodies, and the position of amateurs in regard to the, amateur.eventa on the. two programmes. It appeared that-there formerly; existed in Auckland one cash association affiliated to the Now Zealand Athletic , , and Cycling Union, with headquarters at Tiniaru.- Eecently there was a secession, and a new body was formed in Auckland, under the title of the Northern Athletic Union (Mr. T. P. Gilfedder, president). The controlling body at Timaru took action, and set up a new centre to carry on its Auckland business. The first intimation., ; the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association had of the position was the receipt of a lotter from\Mt. Moss' Ballin, secretary of the;-amateur centre in Auckland) who. explained .that, two cash meetings were to be held in Auokland 'on Labour Day—one under the auspices of the New Zealand'Athlotio and Cycling .Union, and the other (the Labour Day Committee's sports), under the auspices ;-'of tho Northern Ath.letic Union. Auckland amateurs were anxious to know what . the position would be in • regard ; to the amateur events, and for that reason tlio council was asked to answer the following questions:—(l)' Should two permits be issued in tho same place for the samo day? (2) What association, (if any) should take priority? (8) Position of amateur officials and rujiners, if all officials and competitors of-the unregistered association are disqualified by the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling. Union? (4) Should a permit be granted to an association which is not affiliated to the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union P , In addition to Mr. Moss Ballin's letter, the correspondence included ail application from. * the Labour Day Committee in Auckland asking for a permit, letters from Mr. T. P. Gilfodder (Northern Athletic Union) asking for recognition in conneotion with amateur events, and letters from Mr. H. H.' Prases Timaru (New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union); asking for the council's support in fighting the Northern Athletic Union, and stating that all the , officials of the latter union had been disqualified. Mr. .Fraser further asked the council, in terms qf an old understanding, to recognise all disqualifications inflicted by his union, and to refuse permits to the Northern Athletic Union or sports bodies affiliated to that union. '. . ' ■■••'. In discussing the matter, the chairman (Mr. Marryatt) said that the only understanding that had existed between the Council and the cash controlling body was that disqualifications should be notified from one-body to the other. . According to the rules thematter of issuing permits was in the hands' of the various/centres. After the correspondence 'had been fully considered, it was resolved to answer the questions of the Auckland Centre iii the following strain:—l. The matter is entirely within the discror tion of the centre; (2) there is no binding agreement between this asso-' ciatioh and any cash association. This association has, however, had : a tacit understanding with the ,Now Zealand Athletio and Cycling Union in the matter of notifying disqualifications. (3) The only body that has power to disqualify amateur athletic officials, and competitors is the Council of , the N.Z.A.A.A. (4) There is nothing in our rules -to prevent, this. If it were decided to issue only one permit, all things being equal, the permit ought to be given to the body . holding' its events ..under the'auspices of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, but the centre should ■ use its own discretion. ;.-■■.•• i It was decided to write to both Mr. Fraser aaid Mr. Gilfedder informing them of the position. ■ The Council extended- its congratulations to Messrs. W. H. Pollock (Wellington), and C. E. , Robertson (Southland) on".their recent marriages. It was resolved that'-a lotter be sent to the-. American .Amateur. Athletic Union oxprossinp: -the /Council's sympathy with the loss sustained by the nnion in the untimely death of Mr. J. E. Sullivan,, who had so ably filled the RQfltwa of, secretary,■-■•. ■ '■■
