The theatrical managers in Australia, an exchange remarks, state that tho war has already had appreciable effect upon their enterprises, and it is not surprising to read that in ' England places of amusement are suffering.- Many of them, however, are retrieving their losses by' appeals to the patriotic fervour, of tho nation.- This is particularly the case with the picture palaces. Managers of the great \ firms of filmproducers and distributors are receiving demands from their customers in all parts of London for military, naval, and war subjects at such a rate that they find it difficult to supply them. Tho number of such films m stock is by no moans inexhaustible, and many old subjects, which were supposed to have outlived their interest, are being revived I Mobilisation and other war preparations will doubtless provide subjects . to the "topical" or "gazette" section, which is a feature of almost every, kinema show; but no genuine war pictures aro to bo expected. Experiences in the Balkan War have convinced - film-pro-ducers that it is hopeless to attempt to get near the front, or to elude or obtain concessions from the censorships. Films which purported to bo actual records of battles were, shown during and after tho Balkan War; but they were almost, if not quite all, in some- meaStrro "faked." At all events, there is no expectation of any battle scenes being obtained in this war; and now that Great Britain is engaged the importation of naval and military films from tho Continent is stopped altogether. There aro, however, plenty of excellent films of British naval and military subjects; and if some of them have been seen before they aro well | worth seeing again. At tho variety i theatres, too, patriotic songs and ta' - I leaux are everywhere being produced.
