BATTLE OF THE MARNE
FIRST CONNECTED STORY HOW THE GERMAN PLANS FAILED (Eec. October 4, 2.30 p.m.) Paris, October 3. "Le Temps," in the first connected account of the Battle of the Marne. on September 5, states that the Crown I'rince was advancing upon Argonne from Wurtemburg, between the Aisne and .Chalons, the Saxons upon Reims, General yon Bulow towards Esternay, and General Kluck . towards Meaus. The Allies at first threatened the flank of General Kluck's right wing, and then, on September 6, ordered a general offensive. The British moved against General Kluck's right, while the general army, advancing along the Ourpq, threatened > General Kluck from behind. On the first day, General Kluck's column, moving on Provins,' turned back, while the Germans confronting the general army retreated on Grandmorin. This enabled the British Army to straighten its lines northwards of the Ourcq, and attack the army confronting it. The ' forces on the British right supported the British in a vigorous attack, and. threw General Kluck's left and General von Bulow's right back over the Marne.. On September 8 the general army, which had been entrusted with the task of holding the front, began the offensive.. While its right held the Prussian Guard and three German corps, at La Fere, Champenoise, in check, its left' fell upon the enemy's flank, compelling o retreat to Reims. Simultaneously, the general army occupied Yitryj its forward move relieving the army there, as its move had relieved' the general army in the Revigny district, which meanwhile, being attacked on the right from Clermonfen-Argonne, and from behind from the direction of the Meuso Heights, was threatened with being thrown back upon Verdun, but, nevertheless, succeeded in maintaining its positions, and on September 15 forced
the Germans to retreat throughout. Activity on the part of the 'Lorraine army assisted the result.
