On Saturday - afternoon tibe' of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan)', Councillors Brocklebank, Anderson, and Jcnes, accompanied by representatives of the local. cricket and tennis clubs, paid a visit to the recreation grounds. The object was to consider the utilising of-the ground adjacent to the gasworks in place- of No. 4- ground, on which it h proposed to construct, a bowling green, tennis, and croquet courts. The matter is to be finally decided at a meeting to .be held shortly. The Petone Lyceum was well filled yesterday afternoon, when the Rev. C. M. Sheldon, of Kansas, U.S.A., delivered a lecture on "The.Working of Prohibition in Kansas City.".. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan). presided. Tho speaker showed how, even though sly-grog_-selling, existed.in areas that had carried prohibition, it gradually became forced down by. law. Speaking of his own town (Topeka), the lecturer, stated that the evil of sly-grdg-sellihg existed for some years, but grew less and less until to-day, in this town, -which had 60,000 inhabitants, the' evil was unknown.-

The Lower Hufct Cricket '.Club plaved a friendly match against Victoria College on Saturday at Hutt, which resulted in a win.for Victoria College by 114 runs to 56.; A football match in aid of the Huntly Distress Fund, between teams presenting the Hutt Park Camp and Petone, was played on tlie Petone Recreation Grounds on Saturday. The troops had seven representative men in their team, whilst Petone had but six seniors. The latter were consequently outclassed, both in the forward and back divisions. For tlie troopers, M'Donald, Hughes, 'Withers, and Nixon (2) scored tries, Owles converting one, and Joe Ryan scored for Petone-. The gate takings amounted to £6 Bs. 6d. Mr. H. Card was referee. Another race under the auspices of tlie Hutt Valley Homing Pigeon Society was flown on Saturday from Te Kuiti. Tlie.results are: Messrs. 'Whitehead and Booth's Dreadnought, time 71its. 43min. ssec, velocity 730.27yd5. per minute, 1; Mr. C. Gough's Gold Band, time Bhrs. 3min. 25sec, velocity 708.82yd5. per minute, 2; Mr. R. Booth's Red Heron, time, 9hra. 20min., velocity 622.96yd5. per minute, 3.. The next raco will' be flown from Auckland.
