The postal authorities advise that the s.s. Maheno, -which sailed from Sydney on Wedncsdav. for Auckland, has Australian mails'only, the Wellington portion of which is due per Mam Trunk express on Monday afternoon.' •. Tho wa.r will not prevent the 10,000,000 Americans who wear glasses from getting new lenses for them (says the Now York "Sun")- American manufacturers already plan the manufacture of adequato supplies of optical glass and also lenses for opera-glasses,' moving'picture machines, and scientific instruments. Most of the optical glass used on, this continent has come from Germany, France, and Belgium. It comes in rough form, being moulded, ground, and polished liere. There is now an ' opportunity for American manufacturers to start a new industry, employing thousands of men, and to supply glass not only to this country hut to South America, hitherto also dependant upon Europe. Several manufacturers already havo started experiments in producing such glass, but as tho process is long and intricate results will not ho 'known for a few weeks-. Through tho war the country's glass manufacturers now havo an opportunity, t'hoy point out, which may never ■bo duplicated to develop a new industry to largo proportions. •
