THE PANAMA CANAL
John Barrett, director-general of thePan American thiion, arrived here yesterday (says tho Now York "Sun" of August 26), on the United Fruit steamer Tenadores from Panama, where ho made the trip through the canal on tho Ancoii, tho first vessel to pass from coast to coast. Mr. Barrett said that additional dredging was necessary, but that the canal would permit the passage of the largest battleship of tho United States within a mouth. "Tho canal, on the occasion, of its opening to commerce, has proved itself a complete success in every respect," said Mr. Barrett. "It is no 'exaggeration to statoythat tho canal worked as if it had been in constant uso for a generation. Not only tho Ancon, a massivo. cargo carrier of 10,000 tons, drawing thirty feet of water, but seven other vessels ranging from a small private yacht Up to great freighters passed through the canal in tho first three days without a single hitch, accident, or unpropitious incident." The Tenadores Drought fifty-six passengers and 80,349 stems of bananas, the largest consignment ever carried on a single ship, according to tho captain. Tho number of singlo bananas is estimated at 10,000,000. William Murphy, wireless operator on tile Tenadores, said that Hip German Government had established oiio of the most, powerful radio stations in tho world at Santo Domingo. The day after tho Tenadores left' Kingston, Jamaica, Murphy caught a radio message of higher power than.he had over boforo received, -lie said.
