UNEMPLOYEMENT AND DISTRESS
VERY LITTLE ABOVE NORMAII.
Consulted as to the pnlse of the city respecting unemployment and distress yesterday, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that during the present week there had been a little more unemployment in the city than .usual, oaused chiefly by the slackness of!work on the wharf. The council was doing its best to find work for those "out, and during the past fortnight had put on nearly fifty extra hands, with the single view of ameliorating tlie existing conditions as far as possible, and all the departments had been kept up to their usual strength. v The more pressing cases of distress which had been brought under his notice were those of the wives and families of the British Reservists who had' been called to the colours. In these cases very full inquiries were being made by Mrs. Luke and a committee of ladies, and wherever necessary, help was being given.
