MILITARY SPORTS

AT NEWTOWN .PARE ON SATUH- ' D A Y ' Mr. O.' P. Slcerrett presided at a meeting of the Sports and Entertainment Sub-committee of the. Patriotic Fund,;held at tho Town Hall last evening. Among those present wore,a delegation of officers oi the Expeditionary Force, 'whose presenco was accounted for by the fact that tlio chief itoin for discussion was a big sports,. meeting that is being arranged for Saturday noxt,_ the competitors; in which will be restricted to members of the Force and tho Navy. Tho military men present included Major', J. Hughes and Chaplain Blamires. Tho sccrotary (Mr/H. Amos) submitted a draft programme for the meeting, which was discussed in detail. Among tho conditions agreed to was that all ovents should bo run in service clothes, which was explained to mean any or tho clothes iwliich had been served out, to tlio members of tho Force; in tjjo running races, competitors will bo permitted to wear their rubber shoes and ''slacks,•' and may also bo allowed to doff thoir tunics; no spiked shoes aro to be worn.

It was decided that the charge of one shilling bo mado for admission to tho park. Tlio following were appointed an Executive Committco:—Major Hughes, Messrs. A. Marryatt, R. W. M'Villey, Duline, C. G. Wilson ; and Councillors R. FJotcher and G, I'rost. Messrs. A. Paape, R-. B. Grange, and B. Keesing were appointed a sub-com-mittee to canvas for prizes. As tho timo is short, it was dccidcd that entries for the championship events will close at"!) a.m. to-morrow (Friday), to close at the orderly rooms on the ships and tho camps, anil with tho secretary (Mr. H. Navy. All entries will bo freo. Bronzo medals will bo presented to winners of tbo championship ovonts, and trophies will bo awarded to winners of all o'lher ovonto. Tho tug-of-war tcam« aro to consist of eight men and a captain, and aro opou to toauis from batteries, squadrons, or platoons. Post-entries will bo rccoived for all misccllandeous ovents. CONCERT BY THE TROOPS. On tlio suggestion of Mr. 0. G. Wilson, it was decided that a concert bo arranged in aid of tho Patriotic Fund, all the itoms of which shall bo contributed by members of tlio .Expeditionary Forco ill uniform. Ho was suro that among tho membors of tho Forco there was sufficient talent to provide ft very excellent entertainment. Tho idea was enthusiastically taken up, and a conimitl/oo was appointed to make tho necessary arrangements. It was suggostod that Saturday weok at the Town Hpll would be a suitable time and place for the concert. The date will bo announced in the Press at the earliest possiblo moment. ilnjor Hughes the idea a very good" ono, but nothing could be done of a definite character until General Godloy's permission was obtained. On behalf of tho General, he thanked tho committee, which had already done so much work in connection with the sports metiting.
