was £60,000,000. This was met by taking credits voted for public works. Another £60.000,000 in the war cliests at Spandau, and the £200,000,000 voted by the Reichstag, would then give enough to support the war for a year, the daily expenses of three million men mobilised being £900,000, or £328,480,000 a year. French economists, however, believe the cost to be ton francs per man daily, which is equal to £'140,000,000 a year. Germany, moreover, was compelled to mobilise six million men. The wa ; r chests in Spandau originally contained £6,000,000 in gold, part of the indemnity secured from Prance after the war of 1870-71. Last year a law was passed trebling the amount by the addition of a certain amount in silver coin, and by other, means, so that on this basis the war chests would not liavo contained more than £18,000,000. This money was primarily intended to meet mobilisation expenses, a.ad has probably been used for that purpose, CASUALTIES PUT AT 400,000 MEN. London, September 29. "The Times" military correspondent states that good judges reckon that the German casualties in France total 400,000 men.
