OPERATIONS ON CHINESE SOIL
(Rec. September 30, 9.20 p.m.) Shanghai, September 29. Owing to German mines being _ discovered outside the zone of hostilities, the Japanese have occupied Wei-hsien to oontrol the Tsi-wan-fu-Kiouchau railway against a German violation of' Chinese territoi-y. Wei-hsien is 75 miles north-east of Tsingtau,' as the crow flies, and is beI tween 30 and 40 miles beyond the area covered in the German lease. It can be ! reached from the Gulf of Pe-chi-li, from | which it is twenty miles inland. FIFTY GERMANS CAPTURED.' (Rec. October 1, 0.50 v a.m.) Tokioi September 29. Official.—Tho Japanese, by a day and night attack on Tsingtau, on Sunday, captured fifty Germans and four machine guns. The Japanese losses were 150. The German losses are not known. ■The Japanese fleet attacked the German gunboat litis, which was assisting to land foroes. The result has not been reported. ALLIES' SUCCESSFUL ADVANCE. A message received by the Prime Minister is as follows;— . London, September 29, 8.15 p.m. The Allied forces began an attack on tho advanced positions of Tsingtau, four kilometres from the enemy's main line of dcfence, oil Monday. In spite of a fierce fire by sea and land, the Allies drove the enemy from their position and I occupied high ground overlooking the enemy's main line of defence.
