ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' SOCIETY

PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION, j A successful meeting of the Accountant Students' Society was held in tho Accountants' Chambers last night, when i largo number of members assembled for the public speaking competition, fertile trophy donated-by Mr. E. W. Hunt. The chairman welcomed to the meeting Mr. Peter Barr, _ ex-president. of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Mr. H." D. Edwards referred to the large number of members who had joined the Expeditionary Forces, and it was resolved that these members be placed ju the roll of honour by incorporating their nanios on tho minutes of tho so;ictjv . Mr. 1. Auton referred to the generous treatment the Christchurch Students' Society extended to the Wellington . representatives on the occasion of the inter-society. debato, and a resolu;ion was passed expressing appreciation if tho hospitality given, to tho visiting liembers. Seven members entered for ;he public speaking- competition, and the names of the competitors and the mbjcct of their essays are:—F. H. Bass, "Reserves and Reserve Funds" ; B. G. Day, "Cheques"; H. K. Douglas, 'Double Account System"; E. P. Lambert, "Depreciations"; C. R. Mazen;arb, "Bank Notes" ; J. D. Eves, "Mininising Bad Debts"; E. N. Tarrant, "Wasting Asset." The competitors, in lddition to reading their essays, were ■equired to answer questions on their >s'says, and to deliver an impromptu speech. ' The subject for the impromptu speech was "State Your Opinions as to ;he Value of Percentage and Average Statements in Published Accounts." I'he, judge, Mr. John S. Barton, in de:laring Mr. Bass the winner of the competition, referred 1 to the difficulty in placing the competitors, as, different ■nen led in different parts of the corniotition. ■ A hearty vote of thanks was accordid to the judge and tho competitors, on ;ho motion of Mr. H.
