HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hiitt Bor ougli Council wa§ held last evening, there being present:. The Mayor~(Mr. H. Association, the use of the Council Chambers each Tuesday evening for six weeks/for the purpose of deliv-ering-first aidrjectures. .. , After discussing an appeal for assistance from the Hunt!ey Relief Fund, it , was decided to donate 10 gujneas and open subscription • list at • the Council offices. A motion by Councillor Ball that £5 be granted to the Hutf Valley Labour Day Carnival was not seconded. ''The Mayor intimated that between 600 and 700 .men. of the Expeditionary Force : wore. encamped at Hutt Park, 'and asked the council's co-operation at d public meeting- to bo held this evening, to consider tho question, of providing' entertainments for the troops. 'A "deputation, from. tho Petone Defence Rifle Club waited on the council, and, through its. president (Mi;. R. Flaws), intimated, that/owing to the large influx of new members since war broke out. the present range at Waiivetu was totally' inadequate to the club's needs'.' They therefore asked the, council for-financial assistance, in order that they might make the necessary accommodation ■ for the new members. Mr. Hγ Ayson also spoke, and in reply to the Mayor it was ■intimated that übout £30 would bo required. In discussing, the matter .later, Councillor Purdy pointed out that ho would prefer that a report/be obtained as to what class of shooting, the military authorities had ordered, and stated that bull's-eye, targets were useless, in his opinion. Eventually it was decided, on the motion of Councillor Brasel, seconded by Councillor Cjendon, to grant tk» club £15. A Western Hutt resident informed the'council that he had impounded a horse on;a certain evening, tho animal being discovered destroying his hedge. Subsequently it transpired that ■ the horse had been liberated from the pound, and he urged the council to take the necessary steps to have the matter ventilated, 'in this connection it was decided that the poundkeeper be asked for an explanation, and the engineer to report upon the state of tho pound gates, and also upon tho cost of constructing a receiving paddock at Alicetown for stray cattle taken after pounding hours. - ■. .'
