DISTRESS RELIEF FUND

POOR OF GREAT BRITAIN, IRELAND, AND BELGIUM. The executive oi the Wellington branch of the "Poor of Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium Relief Fund" met yesterday. Tho general seoretary, Mr. It. AV. Shallcraes, reported that he had visited the Wanganui and Taranaki districts, and found that in Wanganui the movement i is. being .. enthusiastically taken up by a strong committee, who have also associated with them.a farmers 1 branch. The funds in* hand already reach a considerable eum, which will be largely increased as the eeason advances. The organisation of several' movements to provide money has'also been very successful, and probably : the resujt of the Wangartui Racing Club's patriotic meeting will provide an addition to tho funds. In Waverley the Farmers' Union is active, and a' special committee has been set up to promote the movement. Some .very substantial donations have been ' promised. In Patea, New Plymouth, ar, d Hawera, the committees which have bi'en organising in connection with' tho_ di spatch of' the Expeditionary Force will now give their undivided attention to tho oromotjon of tho Poor of Great Britain, Ireland, and Belgium Relief Fund. Tho matter is also being taken , lip in Stratford. ', It was also reported that the Tokomani had made a contribution of 400 eheep, which were being shipped in the Star of Australia, and that notification had besn received from r the Mayoress of Masterton, Mrs. J. M. Coradine, that the ladies of Masterton had- packed seven cases of warm clothing for presentation to, the fund: It was decided to extend the'heartiest thankjj of; the committeo to the donors for then liberal gifts. It was also■ decided to request tho Mayor and Mayoress of Wellington to allow.their names to ibe added to the committee'. It-was also understood that the various churches will make collections on Sunday next, when it is hoped the. fund will be materially increased in consequence. : . . ■ . ■
