CASE BEFORE THE COURT.
The- congested state .of- the public enclosure at the- Magistrate's Court yesterday" was duo more or less to the appearance of Hugo Seewald, a young naturalised German who was arrested by Detective-Sergeant llawlo and Sergeant Kelly on 20, and remanded from last week on charges of (1) establishing a plant capable of transmitting and receiving wireless '■ telegrams with it.without first obtaining the consent of the Governor-iu-Council; (2) obtaining from Henry John Tolly a wireless instrument with' intent to defraud. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., was on the Bench.
In asking for a further remand to October 6,' Chief Detective Broberg said "■hat the Commissioner of Police was conferring with the military authorities as to whether accused should not ,be made a prisoner of war. "In future," said Detective Broberg,. "anyone^found in possession of wireless apparatus will ,be immediately arrested as a prisoner of war." '■■■■ ' ■ '.■.■"'
■Accused (to the Magistrate): '.'May I ask for. light bail? It was only a.model I bought." The latter remark was accompanied - with 'a smile.
The Magistrate: Do you know what you are liable to for what you are charged with? . . . • Accused: No. -The Magistrate:. A'£soo fine.. : .Accused said no ; more and was remanded forthwith till Wednesday .next;'
Mr. 0. C. Mazengarb appeared ior accused and asked that he be remanded to Somes Island, but the application wae refused. " ' ... '>
