Paris, September 28. _ Lieutenant Verlin has • been mentioned in General Joffre's dispatches for leading fifty men on a reconnoitring expedition, ten miles ahead of, the positions on the Oise, obtaining information which compelled the retreat pf thousands of Germans. When the enemy approached, Lieutenant Verlin spread his men on the edge of a wood. A rapid fire was kept up, the Frenchmen moving from place to place in order to appear more numerous. The Germans did not enter the wood, and at nightfail Lieutenant Verlin led thirteen' remaining men to the French lines.
