IVontham horses played a prominent paffc -in' the settlement of the various races, three, of them being returned winners, namely, Undecided, Rkne, aad Arlington. No fewer than 22 horses contested the Maiden Plate, for which thc'Poririia candidate, Gold Soiilt (Gold Reef — Consuelo) was. a better favourite than Improve and tlie'Trentham-trainod , Miraculous.- At. the barrier the horses were veryi crowded and the result was
a straggling start., The favourite, however, got well away and had every chance to win, 'but after leading into .the -straight he was caught aud heate'n by Lady Black, a member of H. Pritchard's team. -.'■■' .

Just prior to .going-put for flio race, Goldstream broko away from liis attondiu-it and galloped a lit.-He distance before being caught again. The incident- was. not calcnliitod to improve 'his chances,-as ho was :plainlv.nervous wllmi leaving tho birclcagOrto do his preliminary. .

In the concluding event. Amity, carrying the same coioxTrs as Undecided, and ridden by O. Emerson, was made the greatest favourite of the day. He never looked dangerous in the race, and was only in fourth position when the post was reached.
