. HELPING THE STRANGER. The eleventh anniversary of the Strangers' Tea was held on Sunday afternoon at the Y.M.C.A., when 100 sat down to tea. On this occasion a-num--Ijor of ladies who had helped the committee wero present, also the Hon. W F. Massey and. His Worship tho Mayor. The object of this weekly tea is to enable any strange man to spend a profitable social hour on Sunday afternoon. The whole of the work in preparing tho tea, waiting upon the men, and washing tho tea., things up is carried out by a committee of voluntary workers, Mr. Goo. M'Kay being chairman. .
In presenting' the annual report, Mr. M'Eay stated that the attendances during fhe past year totalled 2526, of which number 495 were strangers. The figures since its inception had' beon 27,000 attendances, ,4700 being attendances for the first time. The total expenses for -the year, not counting gifts of foodstuffs, was £63 13s. 3d., the cash receipts falling a little short of that amount. However, Mr. Ilott very generously converted tliis debit balance to a credit. His kind action, is very much appreciated.
Mention was made of two members of the committee having entered the association as a life\york, Messrs. R. D: Baker and B. Mabiii) at Ohristchuroh and Wellington respectively, also of. Mr. E. Hollis having gone with the Expeditionary Force to Samoa. It is with, feelings of deep-sympathy that reference was made to the recent death of Mr. 0. Ponman, whom the committee had learned to love. His loss leaves a big gap in this circle of friends. Prior to tea a meeting at which the Hon. W. F. Massey presided, was held for men only, a most stirring address upon the parable of (bh talents being given by tlio Rev. Dr. Gibb.
