WELLINGTON VIA. PANAMA. Messrs. Dalgcly and Co., local agents for the U.S. and A. Line, have been advised that a steamer named the Capo Corso, 3890 tone, has been chartered to load at New York for Now Zealand and Australian ports. The vessel will come out, via the Panama Canal instead of by the usual route, viz. the Cape of Good Hope. The Capo Corso will bo the first vessel to come to New Zealand ports via the. Panama Canal, and will diecharjeo cargo here beforo proceeding to Australian port*-

Continuing her journey from Melbourne, the Union Company's steamer Meoraki left Sydney for Wellington at 4 p.m. on Friday last. Sho has £9 saloon and £8 steerage passengers, as well ns 390 'tons oi cargo, on board for this port. -Included in the latter arc ' 1168 packages of fruit. The Moerald should arrive at' Wellington to-morrow morning. . ■ Present indications point to. the F. and S. Line's Surrey being dispatched from Auckland for Wellington to-morrow. The .vessel will land Liverpool cargo hero next Friday. An, arrival at Melbourne from Montreal on Saturday was tho Now Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Knight of the Garter. When the mall steamer Corinthic has completed the Auckland portion of her homeward loading she will leave tho northern port of Wellington on October' 2, being due here on October 4. It is anticipated that when heavy rain has fallen the channel will be open for traffic. . - It is exoected that the Monowai will leave Wellington for Lyttelton to-do.y, where sho will bo docked to-morrow. On Wednesday the Monowai will tako up tho Maori's running in the Wcllington-Lyttel-ton ferry service. Tho latter vessel will leave Lyttelton for Port Chalmers . on Thursday for overhaul. - ' The Union Company's Flora will bo dispatched from Wellington for Picton and West Coast ports to-day. . The schooner Eliza Firth and the brigantine Aratapu have been ongaeed for many years pn-st in the Lyttelton-Kaipara trade, and during their.career several interesting contest? have ensued. Some six years ago the Aratapu was credited with having sailed the distance of 578 miles in the -smart time, of forty-eight hours, whilst the Elka Firth has been credited with fifty-two hours. Another interesting race commenced at; 12.30 p.m. on September 18, when both craft, after being bDr. bound for about a fortnight, crossed tho bar together on the run pouth. Variable winds were encountered. The honours on this. occasion fell to the lot of tho Eliza Firth, which passed through Lyttelton -Heads at 7.55 p.m. on Wednesday,- the Aratamt not arriving until 2.25 a.m. oni Thursday. Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Pnkcha had completed discharge of Home cargo in Now Zealand, that she would go across to Australia to .load. These arrangements havo now -been changed, and tho vesesl will load in New Zealand waters. It has been arranged that the Pakoha should leave Auckland for Wellington on Friday, October 2. She is due hero on Sunday, October 4, and will continue her journey to Timant on October 8. Subsequently, visits will be paid to Bluff and Dunedin. She will loave the last-mentioned port for, Wellington on Thursday. October 22. arriving hero on Friday. October 23. Departure will be taken from this port for London on Friday, October 30.
