MR. ROBERTSON M.P. AND THE LICENSING BILL

HIS ABSENCE FROM THE DIVISION. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P. for Otaki, has forwarded tho following to the Otaki No-lioenee League, in reply to the resolution passed by that body at'its Shannon meeting in-August, asking for 'an explanation of his failure to record his vote on the division that killed tho recent Licensing Bill. Mr. Robertson cays: "I journeyed to Auckland, on thc> Saturday prior to tho division in question, to fulfil an important engagement, intending to bo back in Wellington on the Tuesday afternoon. On the journey north 1 must have caught a chill, as I was violently ill immediately after my arrival in Auckland, and was confined to bed during most of my stay there. I was unable to leave on the Monday evening as intended, and only managed to leave on tho. Tuesday at noon, arriving in Wellington on Wednesday : morning. At the time, therefore, wnen the Licensing Bill wa3 before the Committee of the. House; 1 was travelling towards Wellington, and this, I hope, will prove a satisfactory explanation of my absence from tho division on Clauso 2 of. the Bill."
