EMDEN SHELLS MADRAS SMALL DAMAGE DONE Caloutta, September 24. Reuter's agent states that the German cruiser Emden shelled Madras. The damage done was not serious. NINE SHOTS FIRED! (Reo. September 25, 8 p.m.) Calcutta, September 24. The German cruiser Emden was at Madras on the night of September 23, and fired .nine shots. The nrst hit the Burma Oil Company's tanks and ignited them. Two other buildings were also struck, but were not damaged. Three Indians were- killed. When our guns replied the Emden ceased firing, extinguished her lights, and departed. The affair lasted fifteen minutes. Madras, the principal city of Southern India, has a popiilation of about 510,000. It has an artificial harbour formed by two arms projecting from the low sandy coast and enclosing an area, of about 200 acres. The city extends nine miles along the coast, and four miles inland. There is berthage accommodation at the wharves for over a dozen ocean liners. SINKING OF AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE. " Rotterdam, September 24. The "Morgenpost," Berlin, remarks on the loss of the Australian submarine that evidently the German fleet in the 1 Pacifio is not idle. The Australian submarine AE 1 was announced to have been sunk through an accident, _as no German warships were in the vicinity at the time.
