In view of the cablegram received recently concerning Jho recovery of the whole of the silver from the Empress of Ireland, which was wrecked in the River St. Lawrence in May last as a result of a collision with the 6tcamcr Storstad, the following clipping from an oversea exchange is of interest:—lnquiries have been made as to whether London underwriters would entertain a proposal for raisl'ag the Empress of Ireland, but so far there seems tu be absolutely no sign that they would care to move in the matter. Ttoa whole of the insurances effected on the liner have now been paid to the Canadian Pacific Railway, and. it is highly improbable that the insurance market would be willing to expend a lar?e ;sum on the chance of raising the ship. After an absence from' Auckland- of three months, the Pacific Cable Board's i-'cablc-ropair' steamer Iris returned to that ' port shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and proceeded to her moorings off Devonport. The Iris left Auckland on Juno 19, ttnd visited all the cable stations eontrollled by the Pacific Cable Board.
