An.outline of the official German version of the razing of the Cathedral is that "since the twentieth a white'flag had been hoisted on the spiro of the Cathedral, and was respected by our aftillery. We discovered that the Trench were using the,spire as an observation post, and therefore it was necessary to remove the post, which was done by our field artillery. Heavy artillery was riot allowed to fire. . The bombardment ceased immediately tho post was removed. The French alone are to blame for misusing the white flag." ■ ANOTHER EXCUSE. (llec. September 24, '6.20 p.m.) London, September 23. Prince' Henry of Prussia stayed at Reims .last week, and as a guarantee for his safety four hostages passed the night in adjoining rooms. After the, first bombardment the German staff explained it'was due to the envoys sent the previous evening not returning.
