A pleasing ceremony took place yesterday when members of Nos. 80 and 35 Companies Wellington Technical College Cadets presented Lieutenant L. W. Hugo, who is leaving with the Expeditionary Force,' with a. silver wristlet watch.' Crane, who is now the senior officer of the company. The death is announced of Mr. Thomas North, another of Wellington's old, identities. He was born at Jones Hill, New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland, on February 6, 1827. In his youth ho went to sea, and became chief officer of the ship Abby Doubrody, and wsvs engaged in the year 1848, at the time of ttie great famine in Ireland, carrying emigrants 'to New York and other parts of America. Afterwards he became, master of the Bame ship. Arriving in Melbourne in the ship. Maga-Polla, he,was struck with the gold fever, and was prosent at the big rushes at Bondigo. In 1854 he arrived in Wellington, and was for a number of years connected with the Panama Shipping Company as their stevedore. Retiring from this" company, he became owner and proprietor of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Tory Street. A family of live sons and two daughters survive him. A portrait of Sergeant Keith Harrison, George, of the Australian Expeditionary Force, appears in the Melbourne "Argus" of September 14. Sergeant George, who is in the Second Field Artillery Brigade, is the second son of Mr. W. H. George, chairman of Georges' Ltd., Melbourne. He was educated at Nelson College, New Zealand, and after leaving school for some years engaged in business pursuits in the Dominion. About twelvo months ago he became one of tho principal shareholders, and assumed ail aotive part in tho management of the Melbourne company. Upon the declaration of war he immediately volunteered in the' ranks of the -field artillery, in which branch of tho service he has already had several years' training as a volunteer in tho "D" Battery in Wellington, Now Zealand.
