SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT AT PATENT SLIP
CRADLE CABLE SNAPS WHILE STEAMER IS BEING HAULED UP. As tho Union Company's collier Karori, 1863 tons, was being taken up on tho Wellington Patent Sup between five and six o'clock last evening, one of tho links in tho cable gave way, with the result that the cradle containing the vessel went, down the slip-ways with a run. At the time the accident occurred the Karori was within about five or six yards from the top of the Slip, woll clear of tho water. As .tfc steamer and cradle rushed downwards at top epeed the noiso. was deafening. In less time than it takes to write, the Karori reached the water. She shot out into Evans Bay, but was quickly under control. steam was generated in the boilers, and the Karori wa6 berthed alongside the Slip Wharf without damage. When the accident occurred word was (sent in to Wellington to have tho Union Company's tug Terawhiti ready, and steam -was got up in a short space of time. ; Her services were not required, however. Provided repairs are effected, tho Karori will be slipped to-day for overhaul. ..'■', ■ '
