The Prime Minister will return from Auokland at 12.80 to-day. Mr. H. E. Nic'holls has been laid asido with influenza for the past two days, and is now progressing towards recovery. Messrs. John Spence and Aleo. Davies wore appointed to the pilot staff by tho Harbour Board last night. Mr. Spenco has been in the employ of tiie board for the last six or seven years, working on tho dredge. Mr. Davies is also resident in Wellingtou. and has been chief officer of the Araiiura. Mr. Danes.oommenced his seafaring career with tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company in 1898, when he was apprenticed to one of the old sailing enips. He remained with that company for ten years and held all the positions from boy to master in the fleet. His first steamer appointment was that of third officer of a vessel called the Port Chalmers, which traded on the Indian coast. In 1907 Mr. Davies joined the Union Company's steamer Aparima- and subsequently he was an officer on the Manuka, Moeraki, Poiierua, Mapourika, and Arahura. He was appointed chief officer of the last-mentioned steamer on September 16, 1912, and has held that position ever since. Mr. Brown, of the Dunedin firm of Brown. Ewing and Co., was a passenger from Sydney by the Ulimaroa yesterday.' When the mail left, Mr. Peter Dawson was giving a series of concerts in Melbourne under the direction of Messrs. J. and N. Tait. ■ The death is recorded of Mr. Edwin Harcourt, one of the best-known residents of South Melbourne. The deceased was 64 years of age. Mrs. Mary Carr, wife of Mr. Harry Oarr, of Wairoa, a sister of Sir James Carroll, died there on Tuesday morning. Mr. Harold Carr, clerk of the Native Land Court at Gisborne, is a son of the deceased lady. Mr. James Nicholson, of the firm of Maoe and Nicholson, builders and contractors, is at present recruiting his health in the Nelson district.. Mr. Fred Gualter, who has been managing a large station near ' the Queensland-New South AY ales border, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning on a health-recruiting trip. Mr. T. J. King, of the Marine Department, who joined the Expeditionary Force, has been appointed to the Head-, quarters Divisional Staff as paysergeant. Sergeant King is well known in local swimming circles and as a member of the Oriental Football Club. Mr. W. Poland, manager of the railways of the Philippine Mauds, ,was a visitor to Wellington yesterday. He is to leave to-day for South America by the Remuera. Mr. Frank Hurley, the official photographer of ' the Shaokleton TransAntarctica Expedition, will leave, for Monte Video to-day by the Remuera. He is to join the Endurance at Buenos Ay res next month. There was a very large attendance at tho funeral of the late Rev.- H. B. Redstone on Tuesday afternoon. Before the cortege left the city for Karori, service' was conducted in the Taranaki Street Methodist Church by the Rev. J. G. Chapman, assisted by other Methodist clergymen who attended in forco. Among those present were: The Revs. S. J. Serpell (chairman of the Wellington district), G. S. Cook, T. Fee (Christchurch), Josiah Ward, P. J. Cossom, J. Dumbell, G. R. Smith, J. H. White, J. Kennedy Elliott (Kent Terrace Presbyterian) and James Pater, son (Presbyterian), the Hon. J. G. W. Aitkon, M.L.C,, the' Mayor (Mr. J. P. t Laiko)i'Mr. C: M. Luke, and the of the local Methodist churches. The chief mournere were Messrs. W. E. and John Redstone, brothers of the deceased minister. The- service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. G. Chapman. At the service in the. church two favourite hymns of the deceased's were sung. Mr. Temple White presided at the organ. Mr. A. Varney, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., is suffering from a severe attack of influenza, and has been confined to his home. Mr. W. G. Williams, manager of ilia Universal Film Supply Company, Ltd., who has been on a business visit to fiydney, returned to Wellington by the Huddart-Parker steamer Ulimaroa yesterday. . . ■ ■ On Saturday last, in Melbourne, Mdlle. Antonia Dolores gave a patriotio concert in aid of the Belgian Fund. Dr. Kendall, having gone to 'Samoa with the Expeditionary Force, his practice will be attended to by Dr. Marchant. The Rev. Dr. Sheldon, author of "In His Steps," who is at present touring the Dominion under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance, is due in Wellington shortly.
