NOTES AND COMMENTS
FBy GlEncoe.] .Notwithstanding the long spell of dry weather, the Wanganui tracks are reported to be in good order, and the races promise to open tinder the most favourable conditions to-morrow.. Capital acceptances have been received, and in one or two of the events tho-fields will be very large. ; Gerberga, who is top-weight in the Durie Hack Handicap at Wanganui tomorrow, was strongly fancied on both days at Avondale, but could get no nearer than third in eacl race. Quarantine has been nominated for one or two races at Dunedin. He had to be eased in his work a short time back on account of unsoundness, but is doing well now. Principal winning owners at the Avondale Jockey Club's meetiug were:—Mr., F. E. Ross, £745; Mr. F. Stenning, £445; and Mr. Jas. Hand, £220. ■ Flora Macdpnald- is resting at present.. The lameness which has troubled her for some time has been causing her trainer a lot of' anxiety. - Ambo, who is-etigaged- in the Ladies' Bracelet at the. Kurow meeting, is the five-year-old horse ,by St. ■ Ambrose from 'Angele. He'.is heing trained at Oamaru, but is .owned in '■Inyercargi.il. •■ ■ - '•■ Flagfall,-who won at Avondale, andDon Francisco, who won at Ashburton, are. among tne candidates for the Maiden Hack Race at the Wanganui
•Jockey Club's meeting. The conditions of the race state • simply "open to maiden horses only," This, of course, has to be read as applying to nomination day. ■ The Otaki Maori Racing Club has every reason to be pleased with the acceptances received tor its spring meeting. The success of the fixture' now seems to be assured. In the Hack Hurdle Race at Wanganui to-morrow, St. Gate has 171b. more to carry than wlicn he scored his runaway victory in the Hack Hurdles at Feilding on Easter Monday. The field opposed to him to-morrow does not include any very brilliant hurdlers, although there are some winners among them. Many people considered that Balboa was the best two-year-old in training last year 4 and on that account his running in the Wanganui Guineas to-mor-row will bo watched with particular interest. In view of Marion form, it would be no groat surprise to find Hyettus actual favomite. FIXTURES, Sept. 2-t and 25.—Geraldine R.C. Spring. Soyt. 24 and 26.-Wanganui J.C. Spring.
